Congratulations to the 2019 SUS Resident Award Winners!

February 26, 2019

The SUS offers two awards annually for the best presentations by residents in the plenary sessions of the Academic Surgical Congress(ASC). Eligible abstracts are those selected for presentation at any of the plenary sessions and presented by a general surgical resident in good standing in their department, where the Senior Author is a SUS Member in good standing. Presentations are graded by members of the SUS Executive Council and the winners receive support to travel to either the European Society for Surgical Research (ESSR) or the Society of Academic & Research Surgery (SARS) Annual Meetings. Congratulations to the 2019 SUS Resident Award Winners and learn more about them below!

Resident Award Winner (Presenting Author):


Mia Klein, MD
General Surgery PGY-5
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Presentation titled: Tissue Factor-Targeted Peptide Amphiphile as an Injectable Therapy for Hemorrhage

Dr. Mia Klein was born in Tampa Florida, and completed undergraduate, majoring in exercise science and physiology, as well as medical school at Florida State University. She graduated from medical school in 2014, where she then entered general surgery residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. After completing her third year of residency, she began a 2 year postdoctoral research fellowship in Dr. Melina Kibbe’s lab. Her project focus is using tissue factor targeted nanofibers to slow non-compressible torso hemorrhage. She will resume clinical residency this summer to complete her fourth and fifth years of training. She is interested in pursuing a fellowship in trauma/ critical care.

Dr. Klein will be presenting on behalf of the SUS at the 54th Congress of the European Society for Surgical Research (ESSR) taking place March 13-15, 2019 in Geneva Switzerland along with SUS President Dr. Gregory Kennedy.


Resident Award Winner (Presenting Author):

Quoc-Hung “Key” Nguyen, MD
General Surgery Resident – PGY-3
University of California, San Francisco

Presentation titled: Fetal Enzyme Therapy in Sly Syndrome Crosses Blood-Brain Barrier and Induces Immunologic Tolerance

Quoc-Hung (Key) Nguyen, MD is a General Surgery Resident in the UCSF Department of Surgery. Dr. Nguyen is currently a Research Fellow in Dr. Mackenzie’s lab where he is studying in utero enzyme supplementation and hematopoietic stem cell therapy. He earned a BA in biology from Columbia University in 2009 and an MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2014. After residency, he plans to continue his training with a fellowship in pediatric surgery.
