Call for Nominations: President-Elect, Treasurer and Councilor

Nomination Process:
The Society of University Surgeons (SUS) is seeking nominations for the positions of President-Elect, Treasurer and Councilor-at-Large for Membership. The purpose of the Society of University Surgeons is to support and advance leaders in Academic Surgery. Officers of the SUS have often been active participants in committees and are leaders in their institutions and in other national organizations. The officers of the SUS consist of the President, President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and three Councilors-at-Large, including the Councilors for Scholarship, Membership, and Publications/Development. The officers of the society are elected by vote of the membership from a slate proposed by the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee is Chaired by the President-Elect and consists of members superannuating at the time of the annual Academic Surgical Congress Business Meeting who have attended 3 of the last 5 annual meetings and who are present at the time of the meeting. At the ASC, the Nominating Committee meets and develops the slate to put forward for member vote at the Business Meeting. Once presented, a call for nominations from the floor is entertained, and an open vote taken.

Terms: 
1. President-Elect: 1 year (2019-2020); then President (2020-2021)
2. Treasurer: 3 years (2019-2022)
3. Councilor-at-Large for Membership: 3 years (2019-2022)

Eligibility Criteria: 
  • Hold active membership in SUS
  • Be able to attend twice yearly Executive Council meetings held during the ACS Clinical Congress and the Academic Surgical Congress (ASC)
  • Be able to attend the annual Executive Council retreat in June
  • Per the SUS Constitution, Senior Members (age 55) may not hold office. Therefore members may not be of Senior Member age when nominated or attain Senior Member age prior to the conclusion of the term.
President-Elect Duties:
The President-Elect presides at any Council meetings in the absence of the President. The President-Elect Chairs the Nominating Committee and announces the nominees for appointed positions for ratification at that year’s Business Meeting. This position serves on the Scholarship Committee as well as the Committee on Surgical Education. The President-Elect participates in all ASC Core Group teleconferences.

Treasurer Duties: 
The Treasurer acts as Treasurer for both the Society and the SUS Foundation. The Treasurer oversees the financial reports and budgets and presents them to the SUS Executive Council and SUS Foundation Board twice a year. This position recommends any changes or alterations in Society and/or Foundation investments and banking accounts. The Treasurer signs all checks written on behalf of the Society, the Foundation, and is a co-signor for the Academic Surgical Congress along with the AAS Treasurer. The Treasurer participates in all ASC Core Group teleconferences and works with the AAS Treasurer to prepare the ASC annual budget and with the SUS office to prepare the SUS and Foundation annual budgets.

Councilor-at-Large for Membership Duties: 
This position is Chair of the Membership Committee. The Chair presides over the solicitation, application, review and notification process for all new member applications. At the annual Business Meeting, which takes place at the ASC, the Chair presents the ballot of members to be voted on. This position, in conjunction with the SUS office, sends out all of the acceptance and rejection letters to the applicants. The Membership Chair will also work on all other membership related duties which includes the dues payment process, institutional representative list, SUS New Member Poster process, SUS New Member Breakfast, SUS member survey requests, and all other general membership questions/policies.

Members who are interested in an officer position must be in good standing and should submit their name, current curriculum vitae, and a cover letter detailing their contributions to the SUS to President-Elect Dr. Gregory Kennedy ([email protected]), Secretary Dr. Cristina Ferrone ([email protected]), and Executive Director Yumi Hori ([email protected]).
