Gregory Kennedy, MD, PhD
Secretary, SUS
Our Mission:
The purpose of the Society of University Surgeons is to support and advance leaders in Academic Surgery. To that end, the leadership of the Society strives to develop and promote opportunities for the members. Two such opportunities developed by the leaders include the SUS Mid-Career Course held yearly before the Academic Surgical Congress and the Leadership Agility Program, developed and held in conjunction with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. The SUS leadership is 100% committed to the members and are always looking for others to get involved in order to bring new ideas and programs to the SUS. To that end, it is important everyone understands how to become involved in the SUS and how involvement can lead to leadership opportunities.
How to Get Involved in a Committee:
The SUS is dependent upon membership involvement. Every year, dozens of committee positions come open at the Academic Surgical Congress. Membership on a committee can be as simple as expressing your interest to the President and/or the Secretary and being a member in good standing. After the Academic Surgical Congress, the President appoints new committee members and committee chairs. Leadership of committees is a meritorious process. Committee chairs provide feedback on their committee members and those members who are productive and hardworking are candidates to assume the leadership of the committee. The list of available committees are available at: https://susweb.org/Committees. If you are interested in being on a committee in 2018, contact the President, Dr. Taylor Riall, at [email protected], the Secretary, Dr. Gregory Kennedy at [email protected], or the Executive Director Yumi Hori at [email protected]. To check your membership status, contact the Member Services Department at [email protected].
How to Become an Officer:
Officers of the SUS have often been active participants in committees and are leaders in their institutions and in other national organizations. The officers of the SUS consists of the President, President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and three Councilors-at-Large, including the Councilor for Scholarship, Membership, and Publications/Development. The officers of the society are elected by vote of the membership from a slate proposed by the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee is run by the President-elect and consists of members superannuating (currently age 50) at the time of the annual Academic Surgical Congress Business Meeting who have attended 3 of the last 5 annual meetings and who are present at the time of the meeting. The SUS Office will notify all members who are eligible to serve on the Nominating Committee. Members who are interested in an officer position must be in good standing and should submit their name, current curriculum vitae, and a cover letter detailing their contributions to the SUS to the President-Elect prior to the February meeting. At the ASC, the Nominating Committee meets and develops the slate to put forward for member vote at the Business Meeting. Once presented, a call for nominations from the floor is entertained, and an open vote taken. If you are interested in the President-Elect or Councilor at Large for Scholarship position, contact the President-Elect, Dr. Allan Tsung, at [email protected], the Secretary, Dr. Gregory Kennedy, at [email protected], or the Executive Director, Yumi Hori, at [email protected]. To check your membership status, contact the Member Services Department at [email protected].
Driven to Lead!
The Society of University Surgeons is dedicated to the advancement of the midcareer surgeon. We are always looking for new ideas and novel ways to promote and support our membership. The goals of the SUS will be accomplished only through active participation of its membership bringing forth new ideas and fresh leadership perspectives. I encourage you to get involved today and bring your perspectives to the leadership team. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any of the officers if you have any questions or concerns (current officers can be found at https://susweb.org/Executive-Council-and-Representatives).
